FAQ Friday: What are your top 5 races for 2015?

Choosing a favorite race is a bit like choosing a favorite child. It’s pretty much impossible to do. Each race has its own vibe & positive aspects. Having said that, these are the 5 races I’m most looking forward to in 2015. They are all marathons or ultras since that is my primary focus right now. 🙂

1) Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon & Gold Jacket 5k –  The Pro Football Hall of Fame marathon starts in front of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and finishes on the 50 yard line of Fawcett Stadium, where the NFL Hall of Fame game is played. The shirt design, medals, expo, and even mile markers on the course all tie in to the NFL theme of the race. Finishers receive a fleece finisher blanket in lieu of the standard mylar wrap. They also offer a limited number of family finisher bibs, which allow your family members to run the last part of the course and cross the finish line with you. The family finish was one of the highlights of the race for me last year. The Gold Jacket 5k is new for 2015. The first event in the series will be run in Canton, OH on Saturday, April 25. This event will also be themed around the Hall of Fame, and there will be Gold Jacket Hall of Famers giving high fives at the finish line. There will be events in 8 NFL cities in 2015 with a championship race held in Canton during NFL kick-off week in September. The Gold Jacket 5k series will be expanded to all 32 NFL cities in 2016, so keep an eye out for an event near you!

2) The Rubber City Race Series – The Akron marathon was my first marathon, so it has always held a special place in my heart. It’s a well organized event, and is known for its great swag. Last year marathon runners received a jacket, a huge medal, and a custom pair of Swiftwick socks as a finisher gift. The community support on the course is fantastic as well. They are launching the Rubber City Race Series in 2015, which consists of 3 events, with the marathon as the marquee event. The distances are designed to coincide with a standard training schedule, and there will be series scoring in addition to the individual event scoring.

3) Utah Valley Marathon – This is scheduled to be my 20th marathon, so it will mark the halfway point of my 40 by 40 journey. I’m running this one along side my brother in law & sister in law, as it will be their first marathon. The course is a net downhill, and is billed as being fast and scenic. You get to run through Provo Canyon, past Bridle Veil Falls, and finish in downtown Provo. I’ve watched the course video from the 2011 event, and I can’t wait to personally experience these gorgeous mountain views!

4) Burning River 50 Mile & 100 Mile Endurance Runs – These ultramarathon events are run through some of Northeast Ohio’s most scenic trails. The courses wind through the Cleveland Metroparks, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and Summit Metroparks. The event is organized by Western Reserve Racing, which always puts on top notch events. 100 mile finishers receive a custom belt buckle, and 50 mile finishers receive a custom medal.

5) Moebius Green Monster Trail 50k  – This race is a low cost, extremely well organized 50k. It also covers some gorgeous trails with stunning views. The finisher medallions are all handmade from slices of a tree branch, and are very unique. You also get a nice technical fabric race shirt, and well stocked aid stations with encouraging volunteers.

  1. Wow! You are LEGIT! haha – all those races sounds awesome! I’d be into the football marathon 🙂

    • Haha! You can always come join me for the HOF marathon. It’s an awesome race! They have a half marathon & relay as well. 🙂

  2. Found you on the link up today – The Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon sounds so fun! I travel to that area for work, so I might have to make that work for next year. Maybe I’ll convince some co-workers out there to train for the relay! Sounds like a lot of fun races out that way.

    • We really do have a ton of fun races near me. I hope you’re able to make it work for next year. It’s a fantastic event!

  3. Hey! My parents are from Canton, OH and many of my relatives live there. Maybe I’ll run the Hall of Fame race some year! Have a great time running your 2015 races!!

    • Thanks Diane! Good luck in your 2015 races as well! Pro Football HOF marathon will likely be an annual event for me, so if you ever run it look me up. 🙂

  4. Wow all of these are longer races than I care to race so I can definitely hold up a sign. I do not see myself doing a half any time soon.

    • Diatta, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to shorter races. I’ve just found that I personally prefer longer distances. (Full disclosure – my friends think I’m insane, lol!) You should check out the Gold Jacket 5k series. They are having an event in Baltimore on July 12th. The finisher medals are designed to look like a championship ring & weighs more than a can of soda. 🙂

  5. Pro football hall of fame race? Sounds awesome. I may need to add that to my list.

  6. All those ultras! They sound so great, but I just don’t have that kind of mileage in me!

    You are awesome!

    • Thanks Jenn! The nice thing about ultras is that many of them offer a shorter distance as well so you can get the same atmosphere without the mileage. 🙂

  7. I’ve never heard of the Football Hall of Fame Marathon, It sounds awesome though! How neat is the family finish?! 🙂

    • The Pro Football Hall of Fame race is only in it’s second year, but the organizers did a FANTASTIC job with the inaugural event. The family finish is so unique. It was my favorite part.

  8. The Pro Hall of Fame sounds awesome. I think it’s really cool that they let your family race the last little bit with you. I’ve never seen that at a race before so I think it would be a cool way to share that experience with your loved ones!

  9. These all sounds awesome! A fleece blanket? A pair of socks? A slice of TREE?! Awesome! I want. I think the fleece blanket just sounds necessary, you know. I have been so cold at the start of too many races!!!

    • Haha! The tree branch medal sounds so plain, but when you see it in person it’s really cool how detailed it is. To think that the race director took that much time to individually make each finisher gift just blows my mind. The fleece blanket is sooo nice after the race! You’re right it gets chilly before races & it’s so nice to have something soft & warm to wrap up in.

  10. What a great list of races. I’ve never heard of the Football race wither. It sounds like a lot of fun!

  11. Hi Aimee-

Thanks for hosting the giveaway! That Hall of Fame run sounds amazing!! So many fun races! My goal is to one year do one of the Disney Runs!! Those look so cool!!

    • You’re welcome Hannah! The Hall of Fame run is so fun & very well organized! Disney races are great too! They are pricey, but there are so many cool features in Disney races, like having character meet & greets along the course.

  12. How fun to do a marathon with family members this year! That will be a memorable race for sure 🙂

Best of luck with all the races – sounds like it will be a fun year!
